Member Interview: Hidde Kross

President of Veejays.com

From Medical Biologist to Entrepreneur

On his old Twitter (X) bio, it used to say that he had “escaped from the laboratory,” and that’s true. “I was trained as a medical biologist, but I found working in media much more fun,” Hidde laughs. Today, he is the president of Veejays.com, the VJ Academy, a foundation operating at the intersection of entertainment and culture. Hidde and his team create spectacular, moving, and explanatory video shows for festivals, concerts, conferences, weddings, and corporate events. “We’re the video sister of the DJ,” he explains. “Our shows are created live by a team of 25 to 30 VJs, video jockeys, who sometimes work for months toward a single performance. Together with musicians or dancers, we build a complete experience.”

The Road to the Tower

The choice for A’DAM.works came through his colleague Carmen. “Our team consists entirely of freelancers, but for project management, clients, and marketing, we wanted a fixed place. Carmen discovered A’DAM.works, and when we visited, we were warmly welcomed by Eulalia and Nienke. We immediately thought, ‘This is really cool.’ We moved in that same year.”

Thinking Big, Projecting Bigger

Right now, Veejays.com is working on the 210th anniversary of a student association in Utrecht. “We’re projecting their history and identity onto the façade of a monumental building in the middle of the city. A thousand people will be standing there, watching in excitement. Those are the projects we love most, where culture, music, and technology come together.”

The team also works on a wide range of other assignments, from performances at the Melkweg to house parties in Utrecht. “It’s a mix of long-term collaborations and fast-paced creative productions. And of course, ADE is just around the corner again.”

Projects That Stay With You

One of the highlights of Hidde’s career was the launch of Horizon Zero Dawn for Sony PlayStation. “An incredibly beautiful game that took seven years to make, the biggest media production ever in the Netherlands,” he says with admiration. Hidde and his team were responsible for the celebration show at Hotel Arena. “In just two weeks, so much creativity came together. It was pure magic.”

Another unforgettable moment was at Lowlands, where his team handled the first mainstage show for Frenna. “Twenty minutes before the show, no one was there. And then, as if planned, you suddenly saw the hills filling up. Within ten minutes, there must have been fifteen thousand people. The energy was unbelievable, you never forget that.”

The Tinder for VJs

“We like to call ourselves the Tinder for VJs and clients,” Hidde explains. “When the match is right, in style, music, and energy, that’s when the magic happens. We seek passionate creators, each with their own unique identity, and we listen carefully to what our clients want. That’s how long-term collaborations are born, and everyone benefits.”

Entrepreneurship Runs in the Family

Entrepreneurship runs in Hidde’s blood. “My grandfather owned a family business in bridal fashion and hats that existed for over 200 years. A true entrepreneur, he was already flying around in the 50s to discover new trends, literally in a small airplane.”

Hidde himself worked at a large international publishing company until a friend, Daan, one of the first VJs in the Netherlands, showed him how fast and creatively you can work as a freelancer. “I thought: this is it. No more endless meetings, just creating. Since then, I’ve been working with them, and I still love it.”

The Challenge of Growth and Innovation

The biggest challenge in his field? “Finding the right matches,” says Hidde. “We connect artists with clients, but the market is broad and constantly changing. There’s also the technical side and, of course, the rise of AI.”

Still, he sees AI mainly as a positive development. “It gives us almost superpowers. We can work faster, smarter, and more creatively. And since everyone in our community continues to learn independently, knowledge sharing occurs naturally. I still learn from our artists every single day.”

Working in the Tower

Hidde is enthusiastic about A’dam.works. “It’s such a positive place. Everyone is serious about their business, but in a relaxed way. There’s an inspiring atmosphere, and social initiatives just emerge naturally. With three young children, I can’t join every activity, but I do miss it when I’m not there.”

His summary in one word: inspiring.

Balance and Connection

To unwind, Hidde is just as versatile as in his work. “Sometimes I’m singing karaoke at a birthday party, other times I enjoy a quiet day at home with friends or family. That balance is important.”

Tip for Other Entrepreneurs

“Find a balance between client retention and client acquisition,” he advises. “As important as it is to keep your existing clients, don’t forget to look outward. New connections keep your business alive. And above all, surround yourself with good people, they take care of the rest.
